BY ANGELA WEIGHT
In our November issue, we teamed up with three exclusive day spas in the area to announce our Mom Makeover Contest. After all, what mom would turn down a free day of beauty consultations and treatments by local image experts? Entries from all over Middle Georgia poured in. From Juliette, Gray, Fort Valley. Warner Robins, Macon, and Perry; women shared their stories of sleepless nights with sick little ones, thrice daily carpool driving, scaling mountains of laundry and evening homework marathons. While their daily lives and challenges were all different, there was one thing they all had in common—they needed a break, a little downtime, an indulging massage, and frankly, a complete makeover wouldn’t hurt, either.
Though each mom who entered truly deserves the pampering and self-esteem boost that a professional makeover provides, we were able to choose only three winners. So, without delay, here are our Mom Makeover recipients.
Winner for the Julie Prevette, age 32
Procedures:
- Facial Chemical Peel
- Microdermabrasion
- Botox Cosmetic
- Juvéderm Dermal Filler
- Brow Shaping
- Haircut and Color
- New Makeup
Winner for the premier aesthetic medical spa, Spa Ten Sixty-Two, was Julie Prevette of Macon. Julie calls her life a constant juggling act. This wife and mother of two not only manages the daily management of her household, but she also works full-time as a supervisor at Geico and teaches part-time at Macon State College. “I’ve slipped into that classic ‘everyone comes before Mommy’ mode,” she laughs.
Julie unabashedly admits that she’s had the same hairstyle since before her kids were born and that her makeup routine has become whatever she can slap on before running out the door in the mornings. Like most women in their thirties, Julie’s beginning to notice some of Father Time’s more subtle calling cards, like fine lines and the dreaded word that no mom wants to hear—wrinkles. “I didn’t want to be made over into a different person,” notes Julie. “This opportunity was about having an expert evaluate my looks and show me how to do more with what I have.”
Spa Treatment Success at Spa Ten Sixty-Two
Dr. Anika Bradley, a Board Certified Ophthalmologist who specializes in Oculoplastic Surgery, is Spa Ten Sixty-Two’s founder and Medical Director. She, along with Stephanie Ollikainen, the Spa’s Medical Aesthetician, took charge of Julie’s consultation and treatments. On day one, Stephanie photographed and evaluated Julie’s face using the Visia Complexion Analysis System. “The Visia images, which reveal more than the eye can see, like sun damage and pigment irregularities, show us exactly what we’re dealing with as far as her skin texture and condition,” explained Dr. Bradley. “The Visia system enables us to create a treatment plan that’s unique to each of our patients and also provides a way to evaluate the success of each procedure.”
“It’s obvious what a vibrant personality Julie has and we really want to bring that inner radiance to the surface,” said Ollikainen. To minimize her crows’ feet and expression lines, Ollikainen performed a 30 percent glycolic acid peel, (commonly called a chemical peel). This procedure cleared away dull, superficial layers of facial skin and brought out a brighter, healthier-looking complexion. A few days later, she performed microdermabrasion to exfoliate any remaining dull facial skin. “Treatments like these are a great way to make your skin look smoother and more youthful and the results usually last around three months,” Ollikainen continued.
Every woman has that one irksome facial detail that she wants to correct. For Julie, it was a somewhat deep vertical line between her brows. “It makes me look like I’m angry all the time,” she complained, before her makeover. To diminish this problem wrinkle, Dr. Bradley treated the area with Botox Cosmetic, a popular injection used to smooth out facial lines and wrinkles. “The Botox will soften her forehead lines and give her brow a subtle lift lasting three to four months,” explained Dr. Bradley.
During her visit to Spa Ten Sixty-Two, Julie learned some things about her face that the average person might not notice, but if corrected, could significantly improve her appearance. “Julie’s mouth had subtle asymmetry. The left side is less prominent and flatter looking than the right,” noted Dr. Bradley. To give a more balanced, proportional look, Dr. Bradley injected Juvéderm, a dermal filler, to Julie’s lips. The difference was immediately noticeable.
As if that wasn’t enough pampering, Julia was also sent home with physician-dispensed skin care products that will enhance the treatments she received at Spa Ten Sixty-Two. Julie felt that her perioral lines added character and chose to keep them. “Our treatment plans are a blend of my recommendations and the patient’s desires. This gives the most naturally pleasing aesthetic results,” said Dr. Bradley.
A brow arching was the simplest treatment Julie received, yet it worked wonders, in conjunction with Botox injections, to lighten her heavy brows and open up the area around her eyes. While other procedures, like Botox, take up to two weeks to show maximum results, the brow waxing made a noticeable impact in just moments. Jennifer Hammock of Merle Norman on Zebulon Road in Macon shaped Julie’s brows and applied cosmetics to further enhance her appearance.
What a Difference!
“Since the makeover, I feel more confident, and I love looking in the mirror and not seeing wrinkles. It’s a good feeling to know that you can do something about your appearance that’s not too invasive or painful,” says Julie. “I’d recommend Spa Ten Sixty-Two to any of my friends who need a boost in the looks department. Dr. Bradley and Stephanie were great to work with, and I knew they had my best interests in mind.”

Mom Makeover winner for the exclusive Seasons Spa and Salon was Karen Rogers of Bonaire. A military wife and mother of two, Karen, like so many moms doesn’t feel comfortable taking time and money away from her family to spend on herself. She entered the contest with hopes of winning a much needed day of indulgence at a top rated spa. “I applied for the Mom Makeover because, literally, it was like I had to. Something inside said, ‘Enter! If you don’t get in the queue, you can’t win,” laughs Karen. “The makeover appealed to me because it wasn’t like a makeover where you get some crazy cut with hard to maintain color and mask of makeup you could never recreate. Getting the spa treatments was what I mainly needed and wanted.”
A Day of Pampering at the Exclusive Seasons Spa and Salon
Karen’s makeover began with just the indulgence she was seeking. Seasons’ massage therapist Christina Davis, treated her tired mommy muscles to a Swedish massage in a suite designed for tranquility and stress relief. “The massage was my favorite part! I’ve always been too timid to go and get one on my own. I feared the whole etiquette scene, but it wasn’t embarrassing at all. It was good to break through that barrier. I’ve already scheduled upcoming massages for my husband and me,” Karen says.
After her massage, Karen drifted further into relaxation bliss. She was treated to an all-over salt body scrub and deep moisturizer to exfoliate and refresh her skin from the harsh, drying effects of winter weather.
Aesthetician, Rachel Renner performed a mapping analysis of Karen’s complexion and created a facial treatment specifically for her—a rice-based enzyme powder facial scrub by Dermalogica, plus rejuvenating serums to plump out fine lines. “Karen has beautiful skin—naturally,” complimented Rachel. “She doesn’t need a lot of work, just a calming facial to boost her natural glow.” Rachel then applied Jane Iredale mineral cosmetics to enhance Karen’s features.
Before the hair styling session, Seasons owner Davida Simpson, took extra time to talk with Karen about her hairstyle preferences and to evaluate her face shape and hair condition. “I like the fact that she didn’t try to push any certain style on me. She didn’t want to make any radical changes if that wasn’t what I wanted,” says Karen.
Davida cut and styled Karen’s hair into a low-maintenance, chin-length do that would accent her high cheek bones. The use of a razor, rather than scissors, allowed Davida to create more texture and fullness. Next came the all-over color treatment, a richer brown than Karen’s natural hue. Davida also added caramel highlights, employing a method called balliage where the color is painted directly onto sections of hair instead of using foil wraps. “Balliage creates more natural, less ‘stripy’ looking highlights,” explained Davida.
The results were fabulous. “Getting a fresh, designer cut with dimensional color is a great gift,” Karen exclaimed, delighting in her new appearance. “The style is very versatile. I can wear it flipped out, curled under, or flat-ironed. I don’t even have to blow-dry it, but a styling product is a must.”
To finish off her day of indulgence, Karen received a manicure and pedicure, complete with hand and foot massage and paraffin dip. “Let me put it this way, I felt like Cleopatra with a court of comfort providers, sighs Karen, who had no problem whatsoever getting into the whole “me time” concept.
“Without a doubt I would recommend Seasons Spa and Salon. Everyone was extremely professional and accommodating. I felt like a guest in their home. It was a great indulgence and escape from reality,” imparts a relaxed and renewed Karen Rogers.
EDITOR’S NOTE:
Mom Makeover winner for our third spa was Portia Smith of Fort Valley. Portia, mother of four-year-old Mark told us she needed a makeover because she was tired, over-worked, and needed a break. Portia is a young widow and mother of an energetic, four-year-old named Mark. She works full-time at Fort Valley State University and is a full-time graduate student working toward a degree in Rehabilitation Counseling. Unfortunately, Portia was the winner for our third spa that went out of business after the win but before her Mom Makeover. The spa graciously transferred her certificate to another spa to fulfill Portia’s Makeover. Time did not permit the inclusion of the substituted spa in our Mom Makeover feature.#
